Ventless Above The Stove Microwaves - Save Your Counter Space.Microwaves have become an important part of most kitchens. They come in different sizes and have different features and functions. A popular choice is counter top microwaves. But not everyone has counter space to spare. In that case you could put it on a microwave cart. But if your kitchen is compact and you do not want to block counter space or buy a cart, over the range microwaves are an excellent choice. These models fit above the stove and double as a hood or vent for the stove. ; You will need about 30” of space from the top of the stove to the bottom of the kitchen cabinets. Most over the range microwaves are between 16”-19” tall and around 30” wide. There are two types of over the range microwaves – vented and ventless. Vented – A vented unit uses a duct that goes up through the attic if it is on an interior wall or out through something similar to a dryer if it is installed on an exterior wall. Ventless – A ventless above the stove model uses a ductless design and routes steam and odors from the stovetop through some filtration system like a carbon filtration system before venting back into the room. This is done by removing or changing a piece in the back. There are specific filter kits that are compatible with a particular microwave. The filter will need to be replaced periodically for efficient working of the microwave. The indoor venting does not require an extra ductwork. GE - SCA1001KSS – This above the stove Advantium unit has 1.4 cubic space of capacity, 900 watts of cooking power and a Speedcook oven. It comes in black, white or a stainless steel finish. Features – 1. Over 100 programmed menu items 2. Sensor cooking controls 3. Four cooking modes – traditional oven, warming, microwave and Speedcook. 4. Control features include child lock, cooking guide, auto and time defrost and custom recipe saver It can be externally or internally vented. Incase of the internal venting (ventless) you will need to buy the JX81A recirculating charcoal filter kit. The filter will need to be replaced periodically depending on the type of stove top cooking (frying, etc) you do. If the filter is not replaced the working efficiency and power of your microwave will be reduced. There are a number of ventless above the stove microwaves in the market today. Popular stores like Best Buy, home Depot, Lowes, Sears, etc carry them. It is a good idea to take a look at some of these models before you choose one. And one point to be kept in mind is that the installation of these microwaves may need an extra pair of hands as it is not typically a one man job.
