Microwaves - Learn More Here

A microwave is one of the most common appliances seen in a majority of the modern day kitchens. It cooks and heats food by dielectric heating. Microwave radiation is used to heat water and other polarized molecules in the food. One feature that you will not see in any other heating technique is uniform excitation. However, this can be achieved with a microwave.

Percy Spencer discovered cooking food with microwaves accidentally in 1940s and the first food to be deliberately cooked in Spencer’s microwave was popcorn. The first microwave oven in the world was Radarange built by Raytheon in 1947. There has been tremendous advancement in microwave ovens since then. Today famous companies like GE, LG, Samsung, etc make top of the line models at very reasonable prices. These models have numerous different features and cooking options.

Consumer microwaves usually come in two types in three different sizes:

Compact – This is the smallest type of consumer microwave and may also be called small, portable or countertop. This is the most popular size dominating the market. They are usually no more than 50 cm wide, 35 cm and 30 cm tall. Powered between 500 and 1000 watts, they measure less than 28 litres in capacity. They are perfect for reheating food and making microwave meals.

Medium Capacity –
They are larger than the compact models and are powered between 1000 and 1500 watts. They typically have a 35 to 40 litre capacity. Often called the “family sized” microwaves they have some auto cook features and sometimes incorporate grills or conventional oven heating elements.

Large Capacity – They use over 2000 watts of power and have over 60 litres of capacity. They can be used to cook large meals and have a lot of auto cook features and precise temperature control measures.

Built-in – These units are built into the cabinetry and are usually more expensive than similar sized models. Sometimes they have an exhaust fan for installation above a cooktop.

Portable/Desktop Mini Microwave Ovens –
These are the smallest units in the market and are designed to be powered from common sources. They may even have DC power supply cords to connect to the charger sockets in cars or clips to derive power directly from the car battery. They have a relatively low power of around 300 watts and hence heating the food will take longer. But they are very portable and have a huge convenience factor.

Microwaves have certain safety benefits that must be taken into account. They have an auto shut off feature once the set time is up. They do not heat up while heating the food and the cookware used is mostly transparent to microwaves and stays cooler than the food itself. It has a lower temperature of cooking and the radiation penetrates deeper than direct heat so the food is uniformly heated throughout.

In today’s fast paced world a microwave is becoming a must have. It is a very convenient, efficient and time saving appliance.
